Enhance your therapeutic toolkit with this exploration of Enneagram defence mechanisms, tailored for New Zealand psychologists. Discover how personality types employ specific defence mechanisms to protect their 'Self' and gain practical knowledge to better understand and support your clients' core fears and suffering.
Our Ego structure/ personality uses defence mechanisms in order to protect our concept of Self. The Enneagram of personality identifies the Defence Mechanism of “choice” for each Enneagram Style. This talk will explore this allocation of defence mechanism by looking at how the structure of the personality predisposes the Type to a particular mechanism, while acknowledging we are all able to use multiple mechanisms. This understanding of defence mechanisms aims to give practitioners both self knowledge, as well as more entry points into deep work with their clients. By exploring how each Type tries to defend their basic fear, basic desires (previous course) as well as their mental fixation and heart suffering, this understanding will enhance the clinicians' capacity to meet the needs of their clients.
