Beyond Narcissism: A handbook for practitioners and clients dealing with narcissistic abuse

New Zealand · CPD points & talks · Psychologists

New Zealand psychologists, equip yourself to combat narcissistic abuse. This talk delves into the 'narc compulsion' and codependency, providing actionable techniques for practitioners and clients to heal and move from survivor to thriver, addressing the unique challenges faced by NZ mental health professionals.

In the last of this 3-part set on narcissism, we maintain our dual focus of caring for the practitioner, while caring about the client. As emotionally sensitive individuals in the helping professions, it’s easy to become prey to personality disorders like NPD and we are also vulnerable in our private lives.

High rates of burnout exist among mental health professionals, who are good at helping others but sometimes have blind spots related to their own unconscious conditioning and devoted habits. These may feel like “personality” features or “character” when they are in fact compulsive or addictive in nature, for example over-empathy.

This talk equips the practitioner with a more neutral, streetwise approach to narcissism that is effective both professionally and personally. It offers specific tools for addressing wounds arising from the narcissistic encounter that can be shared with clients.
